TOKYO -- The Tokyo Metropolitan Government reported 534 more coronavirus infections in Japan's capital on June 26 -- the fourth day in a row it has recorded over 500 new cases.

The new cases came after the Japanese capital recorded 562 infections on June 25. Tokyo is under quasi-emergency measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus infections.

In the first week of June, Tokyo recorded an average of 422.9 new infections per day, before the figure declined to 380.4 in the second week, and rose slightly to 391.9 in the third. The figures were down from the daily average of 705.8 in May. Tokyo saw a monthly high of 39,664 new virus cases in January -- an average of 1,279.5 infections per day, and the highest single-month total since the pandemic began in spring 2020.

By June 25, a total of 2,218 people had died of COVID-19 in Tokyo.

To date, Tokyo has recorded 172,041 infections, the most of any of Japan's 47 prefectures. As of June 25, there were 1,385 COVID-19 patients in hospital, 38 with severe symptoms.
