A 5-year-old girl was hit by a vehicle and killed in the District on Monday evening, the D.C. police said.
The incident occurred just before 7 p.m. at 14th and Irving streets NE, said Brianna Burch, a police spokeswoman.

According to preliminary reports, the girl was riding a scooter or bicycle, Burch said.
The circumstances of the incident were not known immediately.
The child was not identified in preliminary accounts, and it was not clear if the child was accompanied.
Also unclear is why the child was in the roadway.
She was struck by a van, which remained at the scene, according to Burch.
The intersection is in the Brookland area of Northeast and is about three blocks north of Rhode Island Avenue NE. The neighborhood is largely residential. A church is on one corner and a children’s playground is on another.
