Tokyo records over 1,000 coronavirus cases for third consecutive day

       TOKYO -- The Tokyo Metropolitan Government reported 1,271 coronavirus infections in the capital on July 16, topping the 1,000 mark for the third day in a row.

       The new cases came after Tokyo registered 1,308 infections on July 15.

       With infections spreading again, the Japanese government has declared yet another COVID-19 state of emergency in Tokyo just before the start of the Olympics on July 23.

       Tokyo saw an average of 631.7 coronavirus cases per day in the first week of July. The daily average for the second week rose to 823.3. In June, the capital recorded a total of 12,979 new coronavirus cases, or a daily average of 432.6, down from the daily average of 705.8 in May.

       By July 15, a total of 2,266 people had died of COVID-19 in Tokyo since the pandemic began in the spring of 2020.

       Tokyo has recorded 186,698 infections to date, the most of any of Japan's 47 prefectures. As of July 15, there were 2,084 COVID-19 patients in hospital, 57 with severe symptoms.
