TOKYO -- The Tokyo Metropolitan Government reported 1,149 coronavirus infections in the capital on July 14, topping the 1,000-mark for the first time since May 13.
The new cases came after Tokyo registered 830 infections on July 13.
With infections spreading again, the Japanese government has declared yet another COVID-19 state of emergency in Tokyo just before the start of the Olympics on July 23.
Tokyo saw an average of 631.7 coronavirus cases per day in the first week of July. In June, the capital recorded a total of 12,979 new coronavirus cases, or a daily average of 432.6, down from the daily average of 705.8 in May.
By July 13, a total of 2,258 people had died of COVID-19 in Tokyo since the pandemic began in the spring of 2020.
Tokyo has recorded 184,119 infections to date, the most of any of Japan's 47 prefectures. As of July 13, there were 1,986 COVID-19 patients in hospital, 58 with severe symptoms.
