       TOKYO -- The Tokyo Metropolitan Government reported 1,308 coronavirus infections in the capital on July 15, topping the 1,000-mark for two days in a row.

       The new cases came after Tokyo registered 1,149 infections on July 14, the first time the infection number in the capital topped 1,000 in two months.

       With infections spreading again, the Japanese government has declared yet another COVID-19 state of emergency in Tokyo just before the start of the Olympics on July 23.

       Tokyo saw an average of 631.7 coronavirus cases per day in the first week of July. The daily average for the second week was 823.3. In June, the capital recorded a total of 12,979 new coronavirus cases, or a daily average of 432.6, down from the daily average of 705.8 in May.

       By July 14, a total of 2,262 people had died of COVID-19 in Tokyo since the pandemic began in the spring of 2020.

       Tokyo has recorded 185,427 infections to date, the most of any of Japan's 47 prefectures. As of July 14, there were 2,023 COVID-19 patients in hospital, 54 with severe symptoms.
