TOKYO -- Japanese children's author Nobumi has withdrawn from a Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games cultural event amid criticism for past conduct including allegedly bullying a teacher and making remarks perceived as discriminating against children with congenital disorders, it emerged July 20.

The event's official website says Nobumi made the choice not to attend. Since his planned appearance was announced, the writer had received criticism primarily online for past problematic acts and remarks referred to in his books and social media posts.
