TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Women's weightlifter Hiromi Miyake, a two-time Olympic medalist competing for Japan in her fifth straight Olympics, said Saturday that she will retire.

"I'd like to compete in the Olympics forever, but there are limits to one's physical strength," Miyake said.

The 35-year-old, competing at the Tokyo Olympics in the 49-kilogram division, successfully lifted 74 kg in the snatch, but three times failed to hoist 99 kg in the clean and jerk and was eliminated from medal contention.

Miyake won a silver in her third Olympics in London in 2012 and a bronze at the Rio de Janeiro Games in 2016. At this competition, she matched judoka Ryoko Tani as the most to appear in a Summer Games by a Japanese female athlete.
