       TOKYO -- A typhoon approaching Japan is expected to make landfall and bring strong winds and heavy rain to the country's northeastern and eastern areas around July 27, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) warned as the Tokyo Olympics are ongoing in the capital.

       As of 3 a.m. on July 26, Typhoon Nepartak, the year's eighth typhoon, was located east of Japan and moving north-northwest at a speed of about 20 kilometers per hour, the agency said. It had a central atmospheric pressure of 992 hectopascals.

       The JMA says the typhoon could bring rough weather in areas across northern and eastern Japan, and warned of potential mudslides, floods and rough seas.

       The typhoon could bring winds of up to 20 meters per second (72 kilometers per hour), with gusts of up to 30 m/s (108 kph), on July 27. Rainfall of up to 100 millimeters is estimated for northeastern Japan, and 80 mm for the Kanto-Koshin region including Tokyo, in the 24 hours through 6 a.m. on July 27. Heavier rainfall is projected through the night of July 28.
