TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japan's Daiya Seto reached the semifinals of the men's 200 butterfly at the Tokyo Olympics on Monday, while women's 400 individual medley gold medalist Yui Ohashi also booked a spot in the semis in the 200 IM.
Seto suffered a shock exit in the 400 IM on Saturday when the three-time world champion's decision to ease off in the final freestyle backfired and saw him miss out on the final. The 27-year-old was not at his best with his second event but came ninth in 1 minute, 55.26 seconds to advance among 16 swimmers at Tokyo Aquatics Centre.
"It was a shiftless result on the first day due to my tactical mistake. I'm hoping to put it behind me and take one race at a time to advance, starting with the 200 fly," said Seto, who also has the 200 IM to swim during the games.
"I'm not sure of my laps today, but I'll compare it with how I felt while swimming and (use it to) improve in the semis...Whatever happens, my Olympics will be ending in a few days, so I hope to come through each race and compete in the finals," he said.
Tomoru Honda also made the final after placing sixth in 1:55.10.
A night after winning Japan's first swimming gold of these games, Olympic debutant Ohashi advanced in her second event after clocking 2:10.77, 10th best among 16 to advance.
Miho Teramura also reached the semis after touching in 2:11.22.
Adam Peaty won his second straight swimming Olympic title in the men's 100 meters breaststroke on Monday, handing Britain its first gold medal at the Tokyo Games.
The 26-year-old world record holder touched the wall in 57.37 seconds, 0.63 clear of runner-up Arno Kamminga of the Netherlands and 0.96 ahead of Italian Nicolo Martinenghi in third.
Ariarne Titmus of Australia won the women's 400 freestyle in 3 minutes, 56.69 seconds, edging American Kathleen Ledecky, winner of four gold medals at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, by 0.67.
Margaret MacNeil of Canada won the women's 100 butterfly in 55.59, while the United States won the men's 4x100 freestyle relay in 3:08.97.
Japan's Ryosuke Irie, the silver medalist in the 200 backstroke at the 2012 London Games when he also won bronze in the 100, missed the 100 final here by a hundredth of a second after coming ninth in the semifinals, clocking 53.21.
Anna Konishi, also for Japan, was eliminated in the women's 100 backstroke after coming 13th in the semifinals in 1:00.07.
