Two British people and the teenage child of a third Briton were killed in the Kabul airport terror attack, it has been revealed.

A further two people were also injured in the bombing, carried out by Islamic State, the foreign secretary said.

Those wounded are a British adult and an Afghan child with a British family.

Dominic Raab said in a statement: “I was deeply saddened to learn that two British nationals and the child of another British national were killed by yesterday’s terror attack, with two more injured.

“These were innocent people, and it is a tragedy that as they sought to bring their loved ones to safety in the UK, they were murdered by cowardly terrorists.”

The explosion also killed 13 US service members and 79 Afghans, a hospital official told Reuters. More than 150 other people were left injured.

In the hours after Thursday’s bombing, the Ministry of Defence had said no Britons had been killed.

US officials now say there was only one blast at Kabul airport, rather than the two originally reported.

Mr Raab added: “Yesterday’s despicable attack underlines the dangers facing those in Afghanistan and reinforces why we are doing all we can to get people out. We are offering consular support to their families.

“We will not turn our backs on those who look to us in their hour of need, and we will never be cowed by terrorists.”

The UK has entered the final stages of its Kabul evacuation and no more people will be called to the airport to leave on top of the 13,708 already airlifted out, the Ministry of Defence said.

Defence secretary Ben Wallace warned that the threat from terror groups would only “grow the closer we get to leaving” before Tuesday’s deadline.

The Liberal Democrats are calling for an immediate inquiry into the withdrawal and evacuation from Afghanistan.
