TOKYO -- Japan's Daiki Hashimoto won the gold medal in the horizontal bar final of the artistic gymnastics competition at the Tokyo Olympics on Aug. 3.

Hashimoto came first with a score of 15.066. Tin Srbic of Croatia scored 14.900 to claim the silver medal and Nikita Nagornyy of the Russian Olympic Committee won the bronze with 14.533 points.

The 19-year-old Hashimoto had entered the final with the top qualifying score. It was the first time since 2004 for a Japanese gymnast to win an Olympic medal in the event, when Isao Yoneda claimed the horizontal bar bronze at the Athens Games. The last time Japan won an Olympic gold medal in the event was at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, with a performance by Shinji Morisue.

Hashimoto had earlier picked up a silver medal in the men's team event at the Tokyo Games, and also won the gold medal in the all-around competition to become the youngest male Olympic gymnastics all-around champion.
