TOKYO -- Japan had to settle for the silver medal in the Olympic judo mixed team final after falling to France at the Nippon Budokan arena in Tokyo on July 31.

The mixed team event, with three women and three men on each team, is new at this year's games. Individual judo events at the games are divided into 14 classes, and Japan won golds in nine of them, four in women's events and five in men's -- the country's highest ever judo gold medal haul. It also won two silvers and one bronze in judo at the Tokyo Games.

Victory in the mixed team contest is determined by how many of each team's members win their matches. The women on the team were from the 57-kilogram, 70-kg, and over-70-kg weight classes, and the men were drawn from the 73-kg, 90-kg, and over-90-kg classes.
