GENEVA (Kyodo) -- An exhibition on the 1945 atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that has been held at the United Nations Office in Geneva since 2011 has been extended for another 10 years.

The permanent exhibition, whose extension was finalized in a signing ceremony on Monday, has on display items such as roof tiles melted by the heat from the bombing of Hiroshima, and part of the walls of a cathedral that was completely destroyed in the Nagasaki bombing.

The ceremony coincided with the 76th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki on Aug. 9, 1945, during World War II. Hiroshima was bombed three days earlier.

Ichiro Ogasawara, head of Japan's delegation to the Geneva-based Conference on Disarmament, reiterated Japan's commitment to "advancing step by step the efforts of the international community towards realizing a world free of nuclear weapons."

Ogasawara said that the exhibition should reflect new developments in nuclear disarmament that have taken place over the past decade.
