TOKYO -- The Japanese capital reported another 2,612 coronavirus infections on Aug. 10, the 15th straight day for Tokyo to see over 2,000 new cases.
Tokyo registered 2,884 cases on Aug. 9, and a record high of 5,042 cases on Aug. 5. The capital remains under a fourth state of emergency as it battles a fifth wave of coronavirus cases.
In the first week of August, Tokyo recorded an average of 3,893 new cases per day, up from the daily average of 1,420.5 for the month of July, when it registered a total of 44,034 new infections.
By Aug. 9, a total of 2,314 people had died of COVID-19 in Tokyo since the pandemic began in the spring of 2020.
Tokyo has recorded 254,781 infections to date, the most of any of Japan's 47 prefectures. As of Aug. 9, there were 3,525 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Tokyo, 157 with severe symptoms.
