MAEBASHI -- A 6-year-old boy was severely injured on Aug. 8 after falling about 18 meters from a seventh-floor hotel room window in the east Japan prefecture of Gunma.

The local fire department received an emergency call at around 8:50 p.m. that day, reporting that a boy had fallen from a window at Hotel Karuizawa 1130 in the Gunma Prefecture village of Tsumagoi. The child, who lives in Tokyo's Chuo Ward, suffered severe injuries including a broken back, but he is reportedly conscious.

According to Gunma Prefectural Police's Naganohara Police Station, the boy was among a group of five who were staying at the hotel, including his mother, 42, and her friend's family. The child apparently accidentally fell over the windowsill while playing in the room. There was reportedly a bed near the window.
