The incorrect translation of the Welsh language gave tourists a very different expectation of their trip to the park than officials intended. In a post by the official Snowdonia National Park’s Facebook page, those working there were attempting to see if many people were planning a visit - but they quickly realised an error in the delivery of their message.

The post said: "Ydych chi'n bwriadu ymweld ag ardal Ogwen rhyw ben?" (are you intending to visit the Ogwen area in the near future?).

Facebook's translation software was apparently confused by the word “rhyw” - which when used as a standalone word means “sex”.

Many found the blunder hilarious, sharing their thoughts in the post’s comments.

One said: “No wonder it’s busy here.”

A second added: “I had no idea that was the expected code of behaviour in the area. I will take note.”

A third said: “Early rising tourists please beware: soon to be a sudden uptake in flashing headlight gatherings in the car park.”

Another added: “I wasn't intending on visiting soon but I'm considering it now, sounds interesting.”

A fourth said: "There'll be a welcome in the hillsides..."

Snowdonia National Park responded to the error, apologising for any offence caused.

The response said: “Oh dear! Seems that the Facebook translate version has come up with something a bit different to the original Welsh version!

       “Apologies for any offence caused!

“To un-see this and show the Welsh version please click on ‘see original’. Please see ‘official’ English version below!”

According to the Snowdonia National Park website, it covers 823 square miles of diverse landscapes and is home to 26,000 people.

It is the largest National Park in Wales, boasting the highest mountain and largest natural lake in the country.

More than half of Snowdonia’s population speak Welsh fluently and it is a living working area that tourists can visit.
