Brexit humiliation as Adonis' Nissan fear-mongering silenced after lucrative new deal

Lord Adonis will be reeling after Brexit Britain proved his Remainer scare tactics wrong again. It comes after Nissan, the car manufacturer, announced a major expansion of electric vehicle production at its car plant in Sunderland. The move will create 1,650 new jobs.

Its cutting edge, new generation all-electric model will be built at the plant.

The Japanese carmaker's partner, Envision AESC, will also build a new electric battery plant.

This, launched with £1billion worth of investment, will also support thousands of jobs in the UK supply chain.

Around £423million of the £1bn will be invested to produce a new-generation, all-electric vehicle in the UK, advancing on the widespread success of its electric car, the Leaf.

Some of the funding has come from the Government which has refused to confirm how much.

Nissan's place in the UK wasn't always so assured, with many having feared the world-renowned automobile manufacturer would leave Britain as a result of Brexit.

In the run-up to the December free trade deal with the EU, Nissan said it had "no plan B" in the event of a no deal Brexit, which would make its Sunderland plant unviable.

Many ardent Remainers like Lord Andrew Adonis jumped on the news and used it as a stark warning against a no deal Brexit or what he and his peers viewed as a bad deal.

Commenting on the threat to Nissan Sunderland, Lord Adonis, the European Movement Vice Chair, said: "With the Brexit deadline fast approaching, as we face the worst financial crisis for 300 years, the Government has less than two weeks to save Nissan Sunderland and 33,000 UK jobs.

"A no deal or bad deal Brexit will seal the fate of thousands of workers in the North East.

"If this Government is truly committed to the Northern Powerhouse, it must do right by the British workers who rely on Nissan Sunderland for their livelihoods and agree a trade deal that secures its future."

Any significance his words once held have since faded.

Earlier this year, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the creation of a number of freeports to be opened across the country.

Many of them will be unveiled in the North of England, the very region Lord Adonis questioned whether the Government was committed to.

The locations of England's eight new freeports were confirmed in the March 2021 Budget and are as follows: East Midlands Airport; Felixstowe and Harwich; Humber region; Liverpool City Region; Plymouth; Solent; Thames; and Teesside.

It is hoped freeports will regenerate deprived areas and deliver a much needed injection of cash and long-term investment.

Meanwhile, Nissan's announcement will not only create jobs within its manufacturing plants but countless more in other aspects of the facilities.

Production of the new model will create 909 new jobs and more than 4,500 in its UK supply chain.

Other production locations have not yet been confirmed.

Envision's new gigafactory will eventually provide batteries to power up to 100,000 Nissan electric vehicles-a-year.

Creating 750 new jobs, it will also secure 300 existing roles.

Speaking to the BBC, Nissan's chief operating officer, Ashwani Gupta, commended the Brexit deal for having helped the car manufacturer remain in Britain.

He said: "The key success factor for Brexit has always been trade friendly business conditions to sustain our business not only in the UK but in the whole of Europe and thanks to Brexit, Nissan is moving forward to use Brexit as an opportunity."
