Tourism bosses hit out at green list changes – ‘Simply isn't ambitious enough’

The Government announced on Thursday plans to scrap the quarantine period for arrivals from 16 holiday hotspots as of 04.00am BST on Monday. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps also suggested the guidance for double-jabbed travellers could change “later in the summer,” allowing them to travel from amber list countries quarantine-free.

But tourism sector leaders said the announcement was not “enough” to save the summer.

EasyJet warned the timetable "simply isn't ambitious enough”.

Sean Doyle, CEO of British Airways, told BBC News the industry could not “afford another missed summer”.

He added: “There are jobs at stake, Britons separated from family members and we cannot afford to allow the success of our vaccine programme to be wasted."

It comes after Belgium announced its entry ban to non-EU travellers from Britain as of Saturday.

The country confirmed the move amid fears the Delta mutation of coronavirus continues to spread.

On Thursday, the UK was included to a list of 26 nations labelled as a "very high-risk" hotspot for coronavirus variants.

Other countries considered "very high-risk" are located in Africa, Asia and South America.

Belgium’s travel rules now only allow entry to EU or Belgium residents.
