TOKYO -- An Instagram video posted by a Jamaican Olympic hurdles' gold medalist of a Games volunteer who lent him cab fare to get to the right venue after a bus mix-up is creating a global social media buzz.
According to the video, Hansle Parchment, 31, accidentally took the wrong bus from the athletes' village when on his way to the men's 110-meter hurdles semifinals on Aug. 4, arriving at a completely different venue in Tokyo's Koto Ward. To get to the National Stadium in the capital's Shinjuku Ward, where track and field events were held, he would have to go back to the athletes' village to get the right bus, which would likely have left him with no time to warm up before the race. He was at a loss, but staff member Trijana Stojkovic stepped in to call a taxi for him on the spot, and even lent him the fare.
This screenshot shows a tweet from the Jamaican Ministry of Tourism, with Hansle Parchment, left, and Trijana Stojkovic in a screen-grab from Parchment's Instagram account.
Parchment got through the semifinals, and won gold on the following day. In a selfie video, he repaid the money and showed his medal to Stojkovic, saying, "That's just because you helped me." She reacted excitedly, asking, "Really? Really? You won this?" This video has been viewed more than 1.3 million times as of Aug. 16.
The Jamaican government has said it will officially invite Stojkovic to the country, with the Ministry of Tourism posting on Facebook: "Trijana played a key role in Olympic gold medalist Hansle Parchment's historic run in the Men's 110m hurdles."
This caused a sensation on the internet, with tweets calling it is a heartwarming story.
