TOKYO -- Japan's capital reported another 5,534 coronavirus infections on Aug. 19, exceeding 5,000 new cases for the second day in a row.
Tokyo registered 5,386 new infections on Aug. 18, and remains under a fourth state of emergency as it battles a fifth wave of coronavirus cases.
In the first week of August, Tokyo recorded an average of 3,893 new cases per day. The figure rose to 4,231.1 in the second week, up from the daily average of 1,420.5 for the month of July, when the capital registered a total of 44,034 new infections.
By Aug. 18, a total of 2,354 people had died of COVID-19 in Tokyo since the pandemic began in the spring of 2020.
Tokyo has recorded 297,391 infections to date, the most of any of Japan's 47 prefectures. As of Aug. 18, there were 3,815 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Tokyo, 275 with severe symptoms.
