What happened to Princess Diana statue branded 'creepy and demonic'

The sculpture, called "Black Diana", divided opinion after it was created by stonemason Andrew Walsh. The original intention was for the granite statue to go on display at Walsall's New Art Gallery but these plans were met with a backlash from critics, including councillors.

The Queen even refused permission for it to be displayed at a bus station, Birmingham Live reports.

People living in and around Bloxwich, West Midlands, where the statue was made, called it "creepy and demonic". It was even described as “looking more like Diana Ross”.

Yet it was finally decided in 2001 that the sculpture would be displayed outside a funeral directors in the town, and it has remained there ever since. Mr Walsh himself owns the business.

But even today opinion is divided on the quality of the sculpture.

One comment on Facebook reads: "Terrible looking statue, a person like her deserves much better quality artwork." Another states: "It looks quite nice."

Prince William and Prince Harry today unveiled a new statue to honour their mother on what would have been her 60th birthday.

The event at Kensington Palace was their first appearance together since the Duke of Edinburgh's funeral in April.
