TOKYO -- Twenty-three members of the musical production "Anything Goes" have tested positive for the coronavirus and all performances through Aug. 29 in Japan's capital have been canceled, the theater operator Meijiza Co. and other organizations announced Aug. 23.
"Anything Goes" was Meijiza's first Broadway musical, starring former Takarazuka Revue theater troupe star Yuzuru Kurenai, movie and TV actor Takanori Jinnai, singer Aya Hirano and others, and began its run on Aug. 1. All performers and staff were subjected to weekly polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests, and on Aug. 18, a person related to the event who had a fever was confirmed infected. Subsequently, the PCR tests were conducted again, and a total of 23 people were found to be positive.
None of the members who had direct contact with the audience have tested positive, and the spectators were reportedly not considered to be close contacts. Details on refunds will be posted on the theater's official website.
The executive committee and the show's producer Toho Co. commented, "We would like to express our deepest apologies to the audience who were looking forward to seeing the show."
