TOKYO -- Japan's capital reported 5,074 coronavirus infections on Aug. 21, exceeding 5,000-mark for the fourth day in a row.
Tokyo registered 5,405 new infections on Aug. 20, and remains under a fourth state of emergency as it battles a fifth wave of coronavirus cases.
In the first week of August, Tokyo recorded an average of 3,893 new cases per day. The figure rose to 4,231.1 in the second week, and again in the third week to 4,719, up from the daily average of 1,420.5 for the month of July, when the capital registered a total of 44,034 new infections.
By Aug. 20, a total of 2,365 people had died of COVID-19 in Tokyo since the pandemic began in the spring of 2020.
Tokyo has recorded 307,870 infections to date, the most of any of Japan's 47 prefectures. As of Aug. 20, there were 3,845 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Tokyo, 273 with severe symptoms.
