Arnold Schwarzenegger accused G7 leaders of delivering substantial commitments to combating climate change and its consequences. The former California Governor delivered a scathing speech at the 2021 Austria World Summer as he warned it was time for a "bottom-up" approach to address the climate crisis. Mr Schwarzenegger said: "Look what happened at the G7 Summit.

"You see what happened? Nothing. Nothing.

"At least nothing of substance. Some of us in the environmental movement all agree we can't wait for those guys.

"We need the bottom-up approach, the people. We have to make the people ready.

"The people are the only real hope. Every great movement in history enlisted the people."

The former Governor insisted world leaders had failed to make steps forward since the Paris Agreement struck over five years ago.

Mr Schwarzenegger continued: "To change metaphor, our shotgun approach is not working.

"We are trying to hit all these targets at once. We need a rifle approach - we need to have one target.

"I say focus on pollution. Focus on one thing. Everyone gets pollution, it is simple to identify and to understand because you can see it coming out of the smokestacks.

"You see it blanketing the big cities all over the world. Doesn't matter where you look, Los Angeles, London, Beijing, New Dehli, Sao Paolo. Everywhere you see pollution."

Mr Schwarzenegger was joined in his condemnation by environmental activist Great Thunberg.

Ms Thunberg, who rose to prominence for prompting students across Sweden to join her on her school strikes for climate, accused world leaders of "pretending" to take the climate change issue seriously.

She told delegates at the summit: "When the protests get too loud, you make the protests illegal.

"More and more people around the world have woken up to the climate and ecological emergency, putting more and more pressure on you, the people in power.

“Eventually the public pressure was too much. You have the world’s eyes on you, so you started to act.

"Not acting as in taking climate action, but acting as in role-playing. Playing politics, playing with words, and playing with our future."

Ms Thunberg added: "Pretending to take responsibility – acting as saviours as you try to convince us that things are being taken seriously.

"Meanwhile the gap between your rhetoric and reality keeps growing wider and wider.”
