An expert from the WHO watched in horror at the unmasked crowds singing and shouting together in Wembley Stadium. Coronavirus technical lead for the WHO Maria Van Kerkhove described "watching transmission happening in front of my eyes". Today Ms Kerkove tweeted: "Am I supposed to be enjoying watching transmission happening in front of my eyes.
"The COVID-19 pandemic is not taking a break tonight.
"SARSCoV2 DeltaVariant will take advantage of unvaccinated people in crowded settings, unmasked, screaming, shouting, singing.
"Devastating."
There were 60,000 fans in Wembley stadium in London watching England play Italy on Sunday night 11 July.
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson defended his decision to allow approximately 60,000 people to attend the final.
He said the event was held in a "careful and controlled manner with testing of everybody who goes there".
Mr Johnson added that the UK's vaccine distribution has created a "considerable wall of immunity".
Ms Kerkhove warned that the highly transmissible Delta variant could take advantage of the many "unvaccinated people in crowded settings".

It comes as the UK is predicted to see a rapid increase in coronavirus infections with the more highly transmissible Delta variant.
There was an average of 31,500 new coronavirus cases recorded every day in the UK last week.
This was an increase from the week preceding that saw an average of 24,800 cases per day.
Across the UK on Sunday people missed in their tens of thousands and indoor venues to watch the game.

Public transport was also packed with many fans singing and in close-quarter with each other without wearing masks.
England fans celebrated by hugging each other after Luke Shaw scored for the national team early in the match.
However, Italy equalised in the second half seeing the game to an Italian win on penalties.
Coronavirus lockdown restrictions will ease in England on 19 July.
Public Health England predicts that there could be a surge in hospital admissions from coronavirus, that could hit 3,000 a day.
These high levels of hospital admissions are similar to levels seen in January 2021.
