After Gareth Southgate's slumped to yet another loss in a major tournament, some of Germany's leading publications gloated over the defeat. In response to an Express.co.uk story on the insults, Britons were quick to remind their arch-rivals who'd knocked them out of the tournament. One person said: "'Again nothing!' German media mocks England's defeat.

"Germany's Euro 2020 ended with a 2-0 defeat in London against England.

"So what did Germany get out of the Euro 2020?"

Another said: "We still got further than them in the tournament anyway."

A third said: "Where was Germany, oh yes they were not in the final, nothing to be proud of there."

A fourth said: "Says the country whose team was beaten by the so-called 'losers'!"

The furious response was sparked after German publication Bild Zeitung gloated as England lost on penalties yet again.

The publication's headline read: "Penalties! England! Again nothing!"

Other publications also followed suit as they taunted England.

The Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote: "Italy beat England.

Then the second line ran in bold letters: "OF COURSE ON PENALTIES."

The headline of the publication was accompanied by a picture of Italian players revelling in the victory.

Die Welt also described Southgate's choice of penalty takers as a "mistake" after England's loss.

Its own headline said: "England's trainer gets it all wrong with the penalty shootout.

"For England, after Maguire came three young and inexperienced players," they wrote.

"Jadon Sancho and Buyako Saka could still play for the U-21s, and Marcus Rashford is just 23.

"On these young lads fell the entire pressure and hope of a football nation for its first title since 1966."

Across social media, Italians posted pictures mocking the iconic Euro '96 anthem.

Changing the lyrics, many said: "It's coming to Rome."
