Queues built up on the M4 on Friday afternoon after a lorry caught fire - sparking chaos for motorists.

       The incident took place near J15 on the M4 between Swindon and Membury Services.

       Highways England wrote on Twitter: "M4 between J15 Swindon and Membury Services traffic is stopped in both directions due to a lorry fire.

       "Please approach the area with caution and if you are in the stopped traffic please do not leave your vehicles".

       They added: "Due to the nature of the fire and the contents of the lorry we are looking to start installing full closures of the M4 in both directions between J14 and J15.

       "If you are in the trapped traffic please bear with us, we will work to get you moving soon."

       Traffic app INRIX tweeted: "All traffic being temporarily held and queueing traffic due to accident on M4 in both directions between J14 A338 (Hungerford) and J15 A346 Marlborough Road (Swindon East).

       "One of the vehicles is reported to have caught fire."

       One person tweeted the "non-moving traffic" went on for miles on both sides of the motorway.

       They said: "Avoid M4 between Reading and Basingstoke non-moving traffic for miles on both sides of the motorway!!"

       According to Bristol Live, people have been seen getting out of their vehicles on the carriageway.

       Other vehicles can also be seen with their boots open.

       INRIX added: "M4 in both directions closed, queueing traffic due to lorry fire between J14 A338 (Hungerford) and J15 A346 Marlborough Road (Swindon East).

       "Both carriageways have been closed for safety reasons.

       "Police are working to release trapped traffic from the scene."

       This morning the Newbury Fire Service was called to another car on fire along the M4 motorway.

       They tweeted: "JY04P1 and JY04P2 attended a car fire on the M4 eastbound between 13 and 12 at 05.30 this morning.

       "This should be clear before the major rush hour starts.

       "Drive carefully and enjoy this wonderful day."

       The M4 motorway has seen a string of crashes over recent months.

       Earlier this month, the motorway was closed following a dire crash, which saw a woman being cut out of her car.

       Back in May, motorists faced long delays after five vehicles collided during rush hour.
