YUKUHASHI, Fukuoka -- Parents and guardians of elementary and junior high school students living in this southwestern Japan city will be paid 10,000 yen (about $91.12) per pupil as a support measure for children amid the various constraints faced in the COVID-19 pandemic, city officials announced Sept. 3.

The handouts are part of a 955.51-million-yen (about $8.7 million) general account supplementary budget bill that will be presented along with 35 other bills at a municipal assembly regular meeting convening on Sept. 7.

According the city, 2,010 elementary school students and 4,009 junior high school students will be eligible for the handouts. The measure's budget totals 70.5 million yen. If the supplementary spending bill is passed, application forms will be sent to guardians of eligible households between mid- and late November, and applications accepted between Dec. 1 and Feb. 28, 2022.
