Greenpeace dumps MOUNTAIN of rubbish outside Downing Street - disgusting protest erupts

The organisation dumped a mound of plastic rubbish this morning to protest against Britain exporting its plastic waste abroad. The group claimed the amount dumped on Downing Steet equated to the equivalent waste the UK dumps overseas every 30 seconds. In order to catch the attention of No10 and the wider public, Greenpeace also included a hashtag named "Wasteminster".

The word was also seen sprayed onto a sign in the near vicinity.

The waste was also accompanied by a member of the organisation impersonating the Prime Minister.

Greenpeace said in a statement: "Greenpeace Activists dump 625kg of plastic waste outside Wasteminster to deliver Boris Johnson a message.

"Stop dumping UK plastic waste on other countries.

"Plastic isn’t just harming wildlife and our oceans - it’s harming people too.

"Communities near where UK plastic has been dumped and burned in Malaysia report serious health issues.

"While we have been living through one health emergency our Government has been fuelling another."

The protest this morning comes after the Turkish government reversed a decision to ban British plastic waste imports.

Last month, the Turkish government banned UK waste imports.

This decision was reversed over the weekend with Greenpeace now demanding the Prime Minister take action.

According to the group, they revealed the UK is the second-biggest producer of plastic waste per person in the world behind the US.

Approximately 40 percent of the UK's plastic waste exports were sent to Turkey in 2020.

The controversy was sparked after English waste was found being burnt at landfall sites across Turkey.

Nihan Temiz Ata?, Biodiversity Projects Lead from Greenpeace Mediterranean said: "We have been campaigning for years to stop the huge amount of plastic waste coming to Turkey, which makes us Europe's largest plastic waste dumpster.

"There are about 240 truckloads every day.

"Plastic trash overwhelms our struggling recycling system, gets into the environment, and is incinerated creating toxic fumes.

"We are saddened to hear that the Minister of the Environment has bowed to pressure from the industry and overturned the ban on plastic imports so quickly, in just a week."

Amid this u-turn, Greenpeace has called on the UK to bring forward legislation stopping the export of plastic waste.

They said: "With the Turkish government stalling on their own restrictions, the UK government must even more urgently ban all plastic waste exports and stop our plastic mess impacting other countries.

“We also need legislation to make UK companies reduce the amount of plastic they produce in the first place.”
