Welsh slate mines become UK's newest UNESCO World Heritage Site

The landscape which runs through Gwynedd was granted the prestigious listing at yesterday's 44th session of the World Heritage Committee. First Minister of Wales Mark Drakeford said it recognises "the contribution to the cultural and industrial heritage not only of Wales, but of the wider world".

The slate quarries become the UK's 32nd world heritage site and the fourth in Wales.

It follows the decision last week to strip Liverpool of its status due to new developments on the Victorian waterfront.
