UK Covid deaths soar in highest daily increase since MARCH – but cases down again

The Department of Health and Social Care has confirmed a further 131 people have died within 28 days of testing positive for COVID-19. The figure is the highest day-on-day rise since March 17.

As of 9am on Tuesday, there had also been another 23,511 positive cases of coronavirus.

It is the seventh consecutive day the daily infection rate has fallen and another indication of the success of the vaccine rollout.

A further 64,585 people were administered their first jab and another 171,676 second doses were given as of July 26.

Some 46,653,796 people in the UK have now received their first vaccine with a remarkable 37,459,060 people double-jabbed.

Reflecting on the latest data, Dr Yvonne Doyle, medical director at Public Health England, has warned “rates are still high and the pandemic is not over yet”.

She added: “Today we have recorded the highest number of deaths since March.

"This is in part due to the high number of cases recorded in recent weeks. We know deaths follow when there are a high number of cases and data today highlights we are still in the third wave.

"We can all help. Meeting outside is safer than inside, get two doses of the vaccine as soon as you can and isolate if you are told to by NHS Test & Trace.

“If you show symptoms, stay home and get a PCR test. Limiting your contacts is the best way to stop the virus spreading."

Earlier today, Boris Johnson also urged caution despite the decline in infection rates in the past week.

The Prime Minister lifted most coronavirus restrictions in England on July 19 and noted it would take time for the data to feed through.

Speaking during a visit to Surrey Police HQ in Guildford, he said: "I've noticed, obviously, that we are six days in to some better figures.

"But it is very, very important that we don't allow ourselves to run away with premature conclusions about this.

"Step four of the opening-up only took place a few days ago, people have got to remain very cautious and that remains the approach of the Government."

Mr Johnson made his first public appearance since he was forced to self-isolate after being notified by Test and Trace as a close contact.

Britons have been left frustrated by the so-called “pingdemic” after more than 600,000 people were told to self-isolate by the NHS app in the past week.

The Government has moved to exempt some key workers from quarantine, but the Prime Minister urged the public to "stick with the programme".

The new test-to-release system to replace self-isolation with daily testing is due to come into force on August 16.

On quarantine frustrations, Mr Johnson said: “I totally understand that, particularly now as we're starting to see some better figures.

"But I think everybody understands that this is still a very dangerous disease.

"We do need to use the tools that we have. Self-isolation is the one that we've got. I urge people to do it."

His message came as a leading epidemiologist claimed the end of the pandemic in the UK could be just months away.

Professor Neil Ferguson from Imperial College London told the BBC: “We need to remain cautious, especially with the potential increase in contact rates again as the weather becomes less fine and schools return.

"We're not completely out of the woods, but the equation has fundamentally changed. The effect of vaccines is hugely reducing the risk of hospitalisations and death.

"And I'm positive that by late September or October time we will be looking back at most of the pandemic.

"We will have Covid with us, we will still have people dying from Covid, but we'll have put the bulk of the pandemic behind us."
