The motorway is currently shut in both directions between junction 21 and junction 22 in Leicester. Police were called to the crash just after 2pm.

       Seven people have been injured, with five treated at the scene and two taken to hospital.

       None of the injuries are believed to be life-changing.

       A spokeswoman for Leicestershire Police said: "We were called at 2.05pm today to a collision on the M1 involving an HGV and a car.

       "Both sides of the M1 are currently closed between junction 21 and junction 22.

       "We don't believe any of the injuries sustained are serious.

       "It is not clear how long it will take to re-open the motorway - it will depend on how long it takes to recover the lorry."

       Leicestershire Fire Service added that a vehicle had crashed through the central reservation.

       The fire service said: "Several calls were received to the M1 north/southbound to a lorry that has crashed.

       "Upon arrival one vehicle has overturned and breached the central reservation.

       "All traffic stopped on both north and south carriageways

       "One person is trapped and numerous casualties.

       "Police, fire, ambulance and air ambulance are in attendance."

       Highways England tweeted: "The #M1 in BOTH directions #J21A (#A46) to #J21 (#M69 #Coventry #A5460 #Leicester) is currently CLOSED due to a serious collision compromising both carriageways.

       "Traffic Officers & @EMASNHSTrust are on their way to the area. Congestion building on the approach."
