Boris set to drop quarantine requirement for EU and US travellers as UK opens to world

This is amid concerns from the Prime Minister that the United Kingdom is falling behind the EU with travel freedoms. According to the Times Boris Johnson believes the nation is “squandering its vaccine bonus” by not taking advantage of the vaccination programme in the UK.

The Government is expected to green light new plans to significantly open up international travel on Wednesday, the Times reports.

This would bring life back into the country's leisure sector as it is suggested the economy is losing £639 million a day due to stunted inbound tourism.

Inbound tourism is the fifth largest export industry in the UK.

In 2019 it generated £28.4 billion in export earnings.

Currently, people traveling to the UK from amber list countries are required to quarantine for 10 days.

As well as taking a costly PCR test on the second and eight day, with the option of “testing out” on day five with another test.

Since July 19, fully vaccinated UK residents do not need to isolate when arriving in an amber list country or on their return.

Brits traveling to green list countries, such as Malta and Gibraltar, only need a PCR test and are not required to quarantine.

Last week, vaccines minister, Nadhim Zahawi, confirmed that people who received the vaccine abroad but are still registered with a GP in the UK will have those doses recognised from August.

However, this sparked controversy among Brits living abroad as they claim this new plan will not benefit many as the NHS is a residency-based system so UK citizens living abroad will still struggle to return to England quarantine-free.

Under the new plans, the Government will be required to acknowledge vaccine certificates from different countries to allow people to bypass the quarantine.

These include the EU digital Covid certificate and the US vaccination cards.

Once implemented, airlines will be expected to check travellers vaccination documentation before boarding the plane.
