Brexit LIVE: Fury as UK forced to obey 300 EU rules - 'Few countries would agree to this!'

Despite leaving the bloc, Brexiteers have expressed their concern over the near 300 rules which must be followed for goods entering Northern Ireland from Great Britain. Such is the disruption to trade, some MPs have called on the Prime Minister to scrap the protocol amid its threat to the integrity of the UK. With rules ranging from fur to trade in seal pelts, the European Research Group of Eurosceptic Tory MPs, claimed they did not vote for a deal which causes such irreparable damage to Northern Ireland.

They claim they supported the protocol with the view it would then be replaced later on within the Brexit trade agreement.

David Jones, vice-chairman of the group and MP for Clwyd West, warned the Prime Minister must act as one of the four nations of the UK is now being disadvantaged, which may threaten the Good Friday Agreement.

Mr Jones told The Daily Telegraph: "We feel that this is too dangerous to the integrity of the Union.

"We've got part of our country that is being disadvantaged.

"There is a potentially destabilising impact upon the people of Northern Ireland and the peace process and Belfast agreement."

Under the protocol, Northern Ireland remains in the EU's single market and therefore must apply checks on goods from Great Britain despite being in the UK's customs union.

The Government has warned the EU has implemented the protocol in an extreme manner amid the row over chilled meats.

The amnesty on chilled meats is set to expire at the end of this month but it is thought the EU will now extend the grace period for such products.

Boris Johnson has been told to "push back hard" after it emerged the EU was preparing to slash the "disproportionate" amount of British TV and film content shown in Europe in wake of Brexit.

The UK is Europe's biggest producer of film and TV content but, following Britain's departure from the bloc, its dominance has been described as a threat to Europe's "cultural diversity", according to an internal EU document seen by the Guardian.

Under the EU's audiovisual media services directive, the majority of airtime must be given to European content on terrestrial TV.

It must also make up 30 percent of the number of titles on platforms such as Netflix and Amazon.

Other countries have increased their quotas for European works on video-on-demand platforms.

A project fear-supporting bank which previously warned about the damage that Brexit would wreak on the UK has announced a huge investment in the City of London.

Goldman Sachs is launching a UK transaction bank, which provides companies with day-to-day treasury operations such as payment processing and payroll.

It comes a year after the Wall Street giant set up a division in the US.

Goldman Sachs, alongside arch-rival JP Morgan, are increasingly targeting the UK’s lending market - trying to take on current market leaders such as HSBC and Barclays.

This is despite both the US banking giants being vocal critics of Brexit - despite them continuing to invest in the UK after it left the bloc.

Britain today fires the starting gun on one of the biggest post-Brexit trade deals the country will strike. Negotiations will begin with the £9trillion Pacific free-trade bloc that will open new markets for UK businesses.

An agreement will give greater access to some of the world’s biggest economies as well as those on the rise in an area with a population of half a billion.

Boris Johnson said joining will “open up unparalleled opportunities for British businesses and consumers in the fast-growing Indo-Pacific.

The Prime Minister said: “It’s an exciting opportunity to build on this country’s entrepreneurial spirit and free-trading history to bring economic benefits across the whole of the UK.”

7.21am update: Fury over EU's multitude of customs checks

Eurosceptic MPs have reacted with anger over the vast number of checks for goods moving between Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

With Northern Ireland forced to obey close to 300 checks on good from fur to fireworks, MPs have warned the integrity of the UK is now at stake.

David Jones, vice-chair of the European Research Group (ERG), told The Daily Telegraph: "We feel that this is too dangerous to the integrity of the Union.

"We've got part of our country that is being disadvantaged. There is a potentially destabilising impact upon the people of Northern Ireland and the peace process and Belfast agreement."

Mr Jones also admitted the ERG only voted for the protocol on the understanding that it was temporary and would be replaced within a wider Brexit agreement.
