The Monarch, 95, was able to see the Prime Minister in person for an audience for the first time since the pandemic began over a year ago. Wednesday’s Prime Minister's 'Audience’ saw Her Majesty and Mr Johnson meet face-to-face to discuss issues concerning the Government.
During royal engagements, the Queen has a subtle way of communicating with royal staff through simple gestures.
These signals help staff understand whether the Monarch needs help leaving a conversation or if she would like to be given privacy.
During Wednesday’s meeting, the Queen placed her handbag on the armchair, apparently signalling that she wanted to have a lengthy discussion with Mr Johnson.
Podcast Pod Save the Queen’s host Ann Gripper once explained the different ways Her Majesty can communicate with royal aides without speaking.
She said: “My favourite thing that I’ve found out, is that sometimes even the Queen has to send a secret signal.
“Apparently to do this she uses her handbag!”
Ms Gripper added: “If the handbag goes on the chair it means she’s fine, she’s quite happy to be chatting away with you and having a nice time.
“If it goes on a table, it means you’re going to be out of there quick sharp! It means it’s time to start wrapping things up.”
