The Prime Minister rejected calls by Sir Keir Starmer to bring forward the August 16 change to quarantine restrictions by nine days.

Conservative Party chairman Amanda Milling said: "Keir Starmer's constant and cynical flip-flopping has put politics above our pandemic recovery.

"While he endlessly changes position to chase headlines, we will continue to take the pragmatic and cautious steps necessary to keep people safe and emerge stronger from this pandemic."

Sir Keir said from August 7 double-jabbed people should be released from isolation rules if they come into contact with someone with Covid, the same day Labour-run Wales makes the change.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said adults who isolate after being pinged by the NHS Covid app are protecting other people.

He said: "The reality is that people putting themselves in self-isolation has been a factor in saving a lot of lives."
