Large numbers of travellers arrived at council-managed Nashers Field in Alvaston, Derby, on Sunday and Monday. Families living nearby say there are more than 40 vehicles on the site and claim it now isn't a safe place for their children to play during the summer holidays.

       The families are fearful as travellers camped at the same site last month and, according to one councillor, left human waste on the grass.

       Alan Graves, who leads the city's Reform Derby party, told Derbyshire Live: "I've had reports of human excrement found on Nashers Field with people and pets accidentally standing in it and motorbikes running during the night."

       There is nothing to suggest the new camp is currently causing such trouble in the area.

       One mum said: "I’m very concerned. It’s not a caravan park, it’s a public park. One young lad I know wants to play football on it but can’t because of the caravans there.

       "I’ve called police three times. I think there’s more than 40 vehicles here and they just keep coming in. It needs sorting.

       "I think on the other side of the park there is excrement."

       One resident also claimed they could see van drivers spinning their vehicles on the grass on Tuesday night.

       A police van could be seen parked at the scene on Tuesday.

       The force is working with Derby City Council, which Labour lost to no overall control in 2018, to ensure the travellers leave the site.

       A spokesman for the authority said: "The council are aware of travellers on Elvaston Lane (Nashers Park).

       "We continue to work alongside Derbyshire Constabulary and other partners in managing the situation, and we are taking action in line with policy and procedures."
