BBC political editor Nicholas Watt has reported alarm on the backbenches over gas boilers being phased out to tackle climate change as he branded Prime Minister Boris Johnson a “forced convert”. The discussion came after the Government announced that they are pursuing a series of new green policies to combat climate change.

       “He recently wrote on Conservative Home on the need to be careful to limit the economic cost on working people, and a former minister who is close to Boris Johnson told me of alarm about how domestic gas boilers will have to be phased out.

       As the world rebounds from the pandemic, the International Energy Agency has forecast a rise in CO2 emissions from energy this year.

       Polling by YouGov found ‘Red Wall’ seats are strongly supportive of the Government's new green policies.

       This comes after speculation that the government might ban the use of gas boilers. Gas boilers are currently in use in around 25 million homes in the UK.

       This could result in turning the green policy into a tax on specific individuals living in certain areas of the country - individuals the conservative party could lose at the next election.
