Dozens of unaccompanied asylum-seeking children housed in Brighton hotel by Home Office

Phélim Mac Cafferty, leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, said authorities were given less than 24 hours’ notice by the Government of the arrangements. At least one child has also tested positive for coronavirus and the Home Office is arranging a rapid-flow test for others at the facility, Brighton and Hove City Council said.

Cllr Mac Cafferty from the Green Party, said the local authority is now supporting 38 child migrants and more than 100 adults.

He said: “We’re currently caring for and supporting 38 unaccompanied asylum-seeking children and over 100 unaccompanied asylum-seeking adults who are now care leavers.

“We are deeply concerned that last week, with less than 24 hours’ notice, we were informed that unaccompanied asylum-seeking children were to be placed by the Home Office into a hotel in the city.

“We were not consulted about this decision, there was no discussion with our communities and all arrangements have been made and are being managed by the Home Office.

“We care deeply for the welfare of these children and have concerns, due to the speed at which this has happened, about their wellbeing and the support they are receiving.

“This should be the highest priority of the Home Office.

“We have requested officials and ministers provide us with information and reassurance about their current and ongoing care and support.”

Cllr Mac Cafferty said Brighton council also accepted 34 child refugees last year.

In June, the Home Office announced several changes to the National Transfer Scheme (NTS).

Under NTS, unaccompanied children seeking asylum are placed with local authorities around the country.

The temporary accommodation for migrants in Brighton comes a month after Kent County Council became overwhelmed with arrivals.

On June 10, the local authority announced it no longer had the capacity to care for unaccompanied children.

The maximum Government-recommended number of under 18-year-old unaccompanied refugees in Kent is 231.

However, since the beginning of the year, this number has increased to more than 400.

Most migrants make the treacherous journey to the UK on small dinghy boats across the English Channel.

This year has seen record numbers of migrants crossing to the UK despite vows from the Home Office to make the route "unviable".

More than 9,000 people have crossed the Channel and arrived on British beaches in 2021.

So far in July, more than 3,300 have arrived in the UK in a new record for a single month.

Last week, Home Secretary Priti Patel announced an agreement to more than double the number of police patrolling French beaches, with the Government to give France £54million.
