The incident took place in a press box during a boxing match for a bronze medal in which India’s Lovlina Borgohain competed. Ms Borgohain won the fight and was awarded with the bronze medal. The Guardian’s chief sports writer Barney Ronay wrote on Twitter that the Indian journalist was shouting “come on India knock her out”, while taking pictures.

He was then reportedly told to stop shouting by the officials from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and ordered to take down the flag of India.

Mr Ronay added: “Bit harsh. Bloke is in his 60s. Give him his three minutes.”

Many people have taken to social media to express their views.

One Twitter user said: “Why is it that the IOC seem to be the people who least understand the spirit of the Olympics?”

Another added: “Much better than how you blokes screamed it’s coming home and embarrassed yourselves.”

A third wrote: “If he is an accredited media member, it is wrong.”

Another user said: “What’s there to laugh about? Everyone supports and motivates their countrymen.”

Others disagreed saying that “usually professional journalists don’t scream hysterical nonsense in the press box”.

The news comes after Japan was hit with a magnitude 6 earthquake just off the coast of Tokyo, sparking fears regarding the Olympics Games currently taking place in the capital city.

The earthquake struck at a depth of six miles in the sea east of Tokyo.

Several journalists at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games reported feeling the aftershock of the magnitude 6 tremors.

Mark Beretta, an Australian journalist, felt the aftershock while he was live on air for Sunrise.

Mr Beretta said: "Welcome back to the Olympic city where we are currently in an earthquake, an earth tremor.

"The roof above us is moving and you might notice our lights and camera are moving as well."

He added: "That was quite an unusual moment, I have not been through an earthquake before.

"We're in a tower, which at home would be made of scaffolding, but here it is made of construction steel."

It has been confirmed that there is no tsunami threat as a result of the earthquake.

UN NERV tweeted: "Earthquake Detailed Report – 8/4.

"At around 5:42am, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 occurred offshore Ibaraki Prefecture at a depth of 30km.

       "The maximum intensity was 2.

"There is no threat of a tsunami."
