Starting in early September, 32 million people will be offered the chance to receive a third jab. Up to 2,000 pharmacies will take part in the delivery of vaccines in a bid to relieve pressure from the NHS services.
All adults aged 50 and over and those who are immunosuppressed will be able to receive the extra dose.
The programme could begin as soon as September 6 and could end by early December, The Telegraph reports.
Plans drawn up by ministers would see almost an average 2.46 million jabs delivered a week.
To date, the highest number of jabs given in a single day was 873,784.
The plans purportedly suggested the booster dose could be given at the same time as the flu jab.
One Government source told the news outlet: “That is the plan, wherever possible.”
However, it highlighted that it “depends on final JCVI [Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation] advice and coronavirus vaccine booster trials.”
The insider added that ministers were “looking to beat our record of jabs per day.”
Last week Public Health England said Covid jabs have saved 60,000 people from dying.
