Sophie, Countess of Wessex, 56, and Prince Edward, 57, have come to the fore since Megxit and are thought to be the rising stars of the Royal Family. Queen Elizabeth II, 95, and Prince William, 39, arrived in Scotland on Monday for Holyrood Week but they weren't the only royals to visit the nation as the Earl and Countess of Wessex carried out engagements in Forfar.

While the Queen and William carried out a tour of the Irn-Bru factory before heading to Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, Sophie and Edward conducted a string of engagements in Forfar and Angus.

The couple don't have their own social media accounts but received a special mention on the Royal Family's Twitter.

The Queen's official account shared photos of Sophie playing gold with the caption:: "The Earl and Countess of Wessex and Forfar have carried out a series of engagements in Forfar and Angus today.

"First, Their Royal Highnesses visited Forfar Golf Club, where The Countess practised her swing."

Many senior Royal Family members hold more than one title to reflect the Crown's ties to the whole of the UK.

Upon their marriage, the Queen gifted Sophie and Edward the earldom of Wessex peerage as well as a subsidiary Scottish title.

Sophie and Edward's subsidiary Scottish title is the Earldom of Forfar which is why they are known as The Earl and Countess of Forfar while in Scotland.

Prince William also holds a subsidiary Scottish title and while he is known as the Duke of Cambridge in England in Scotland he is The Earl of Strathearn.

Edward is the Queen's youngest son and the only one of her children not to have divorced.

Their Wessexes enduring marriage is thought to endear them to the queen who values longevity.

Sophie and Edward have a close relationship with the Queen and live just down the road from Windsor Castle at Bagshot Park in Surrey.

They are thought to be a safe pair of hands and were among the first royals to visit the Queen in the wake of Prince Philip's death.

In recent months, the Queen has allowed them to speak out on her behalf and publically address how the family has been coping following the loss of the Duke of Edinburgh.

The Queen is expected to remain in Scotland until Friday for Holyrood week.

A description of Holyrood Weed on the Royal Family's official website states: "Each year, The Queen spends a week visiting various regions in Scotland, meeting Scots from all walks of life and hosting thousands at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in recognition of their good work.

"Known in Scotland as 'Royal Week', and to others as 'Holyrood Week', these visits celebrate Scottish culture, achievement and community.

"Holyrood week normally takes place from the end of June to the beginning of July."
