In the early hours of Saturday, the US military conducted an airstrike against the affiliate of so-called Islamic State in Afghanistan in retaliation for Thursday's bombing. In a statement, Mr Biden promised further retribution.

The US President said: "This strike was not the last.

"We will continue to hunt down any person involved in that heinous attack and make them pay."

Mr Biden also warned the risk of another terrorist attack was likely in the next 24 to 36 hours.

He said: "The situation on the ground continues to be extremely dangerous, and the threat of terrorist attacks on the airport remains high.

"Our commanders informed me that an attack is highly likely in the next 24-36 hours."

The terror attack by Isis-K outside Kabul airport on Thursday killed Afghan civilians and 13 US troops.

Two British adults and the child of a British national were also victims of the bombing.

It comes as the US evacuation effort from Afghanistan is winding down.

And the Ministry of Defence today confirmed the last dedicated flight purely for the UK evacuation effort had left Kabul.

Further flights leaving from the airport would be able to carry evacuees but would also be transporting UK diplomatic staff and military personnel as the operation comes to an end.

General Sir Nick Carter, the Chief of the Defence Staff, said the effort to evacuate UK nationals and eligible Afghans from Kabul airport had "gone as well as it could do in the circumstances".
