The accident took place on the northbound carriageway, between Junction 8 and Junction 9. According to traffic monitoring service Inrix all lanes are now reopen, but some disruption remains.

       They tweeted: “Queueing traffic due to earlier accident on M5 Northbound between J8 (M50 interchange) and J7 A44 (Worcester / Evesham).

       “All lanes have been re-opened. Traffic was released at 12:50 after being held for five minutes.

       “A vehicle collided with the central reservation barrier.”

       Earlier Inrix reported significant delays, including on the M5 southbound.

       The monitoring service said: “All traffic being temporarily held and queueing traffic due to multi-vehicle accident on M5 Northbound between J8 M50 and J7 A44.

       “All traffic held just after 12.45pm. Southbound is slow due to onlookers.”

       One Twitter user warned: “If you are coming off at junction 1 M5 - avoid Perry Bar roundabout - traffic horrendous.”

       The M5 chaos resulted in the Worcester Warriors Women’s rugby match being delayed by 15 minutes.

       The rugby union club tweeted: “2.15pm kick-off!

       “Kick-off has been delayed by 15 minutes due to traffic on the M5.”

       The Worcester Warriors Women are due to play the Bristol Bears Women in a pre-season friendly.

       Inrix also reports “long delays and queueing traffic” on the M5 southbound, between J15 and J20, due to holiday traffic.

       The M5 is busy today as holidaymakers travel from the Midlands to Devon and Cornwall.
