The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped back from The Firm in March, losing their honorary titles and patronages as a result. Since then, the couple have spoken out against their status in the family, with expert Camilla Tominey claiming Harry’s frustrations with royals began years before Meghan entered his life.
Speaking on the ITV documentary 'Harry and William: What Went Wrong?’, Ms Tominey suggested the Duke may have felt “spare to the heir”.
The expert believes Harry wanted to “make his life count” before Prince William and Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge pushed him down the line of succession with their children.
She said on the programme: “There was a lot of talk, even before Meghan was on the scene, of Harry saying, 'Why can't I do this'?"
Ms Tominey also suggested Harry wanted to carry out his roles in a new way and “do it a bit differently”.

When the Duke met Meghan in 2016, Ms Tominey believes she added “rocket fuel” onto Harry’s desire for change.
Royal expert Angela Levin told The Andrew Pierce Show the Duke is asserting a new way of being a member of the Royal Family.
She said: “I think all this laying down laws is part of his determination to be a royal but in a very different way, a Californian way, where he is the person who is going to continue Diana's work more than anyone.
"I was quite shocked when he was saying, 'there's a large part of Diana in me and she thought the world would be changed by youth, and she loved the youth, and Meghan and I are doing exactly this.
"I thought 'hang on, he's making the speech that puts William second'."
ITV’s ‘Harry and William: What Went Wrong?’ explored the brother's rift, and aired days before they unveiled a statue of Princess Diana at Kensington Palace.
Vanity Fair royal editor Katie Nicholl noted on the programme Harry, William and Kate worked very closely before Meghan began dating the Sussex royal.
She said: "They were living together, albeit across the courtyard.
“They were working together out of the same office.
"They were doing the same charitable work. You couldn't get a tighter unit."

In March, the Sussex royals spoke about their struggles in the family with Oprah Winfrey on CBS.
Harry said he felt “trapped" in his role, and claimed he'd never have been able to get out without Meghan by his side.
He told Ms Winfrey: “I was trapped, but I didn’t know I was trapped. Trapped within the system, like the rest of my family are.
"My father and my brother, they are trapped.
“They don’t get to leave. And I have huge compassion for that."
