The former Leicester and Blackburn Rovers midfielder stepped in to break up a fight that broke out between fans at the Macclesfield versus Congelton clash, The Sun has revealed. Robbie Savage, 46, was seen rushing towards the chaos on the Bank Holiday fixture held at a rammed Leasing.com Stadium in Macclesfield.

The clip posted to social media was captioned: "Savage to the rescue."

Fans championed the ex-Premier League midfielder's decision to intervene.

One said: "Big up Robbie Savage for going into the fighting crowd to calm it down absolute legend!"

The ex-Welsh international, who is now a pundit on the BBC and BT Sport, is also a part-owner for the Silkmen.

A spokesman for Savage said: "Robbie being part owner of the Football Club was keen to break up the small selection of fans who were being aggressive to ensure the game finished without any violence.

"He hopes everyone got home safely."

The spokesman added: "It was a fantastic occasion for Macclesfield Football Club today with over 3500 fans back in the stadium."

Mr Savage's side emerged victorious in the clash between the two Cheshire clubs 1-0.

But tensions between fans on the terraces had been rising well before kick-off.

A spectator claimed: "At first supporters were just throwing cans, and there were smoke bombs about 20 minutes before kick off.

"Then they all just kind of rushed each other."

One long-standing fan of the "Macc" said they had never seen scenes like it before.

"I've been going to watch Macc since 1987 and I've never seen such disgraceful scenes," they said.

They went on to challenge the security set-up at the ground by adding: "Who's decision was it NOT to segregate today?

       "Where was the police presence?

"Very naive of the club not to expect that there would be some mindless idiots out to cause trouble today."
