'Ask him questions!' Biden calls for Boris grilling after US-UK trade deal falls through

The Sun's political editor Harry Cole demanded an answer from President Biden as to whether Britain is "still at the back of a queue for a free trade deal" with the United States following the fading chances of a deal between the two nations.

But Mr Biden dodged the question and gestured at Prime Minister Boris Johnson to answer instead, despite it being directed at Mr Biden.

Mr Biden said: "Ask him a question, not me!

"We are going to have to work that [trade deal] through."

Boris chimed in, adding: ”Don’t forget folks, we have settled the Boeing Airbus thing which was a massive problem between us.

“And say nothing of the beef and whiskey which I already mentioned."

Biden interjected saying “you smiled when you said the whiskey!”

The "back of the queue" refrerence is in relation to a comment made by former US President Barack Obama who in the run-up to the 2016 Brexit referendum slammed how Britain would be last in line for a trade deal if it voted to leave the European Union.

The comments come as Boris Johnson has refused to commit to securing a UK-US free trade deal by the next general election.

Asked if he would get the post-Brexit agreement by 2024, the prime minister told Sky News in New York: "We will keep going with free trade deals around the world, including in the United States.

"I have plenty of reason to be optimistic about that. But the Americans do negotiate very hard."

Mr Johnson stressed the UK and US are "going to go as fast as we can" in order to get a deal sorted between the pair.

Despite the comments, earlier in his visit to the USA this week, the Prime Minister already played down the prospect of an imminent trade deal between the countries,.

He explained how Mr Biden instead has "a lot of fish to fry" currently.

Mr Johnson added: "On the FTA [free trade agreement], the reality is that Joe has a lot of fish to fry.

"He's got a huge infrastructure package, he's got a build back better package.

"We want to do it, but what we want is a good FTA, a great FTA."
