Police confirmed two males, in their 20s and 30s respectively, received gunshot wounds to their hands and legs. Both are receiving treatment at Royal Liverpool University Hospital, with neither reported to be in a life-threatening condition.

The incident took place in the area of Stanley Road.

The two victims were admitted to hospital around 12:50am on Wednesday.

Stanley Road remains closed between Crocus Street and Fountains Road due to a “police incident”.

Police remain on the scene and are investigating the attack.

Part of Pansy Street, off Stenley Road, is also cordoned off.

According to the Liverpool Echo officers have been placing evidence markers and taking photographs of splatters of blood.

In a statement Merseyside Police said: “Detectives are investigating following an injury shooting in Kirkdale in the early hours of this morning, Wednesday, September 8.

“Enquiries have confirm that the incident is believed to have happened in the Stanley Road area. A scene is in place in the area as officers continue forensic, CCTV and door-to-door enquiries and gather information.”

Detective Inspector John Fitzgerald, from the Merseyside Police firearms investigation team, said: “We’re working to piece together exactly what happened and so are keen to speak to anyone who was in the vicinity of Stanley Road and Pansy Street around midnight and saw or heard anything, either the shooting itself or any people making away from the area, and vehicle details.

“Recent days have seen a number of firearms removed from the streets, and recent months a downturn in these types of incidents.

“To have such success it is absolutely vital that we get all information from those communities who feel the impact of gun crime, so we can bring those responsible to justice.
