Despite the lifting of all legal restrictions in England, the pandemic is far from over. Reports have been circulating that an October lockdown could be enforced, as ministers are increasingly worried about the UK’s death rate from Covid.

The number of Brits dying within 28 days of a positive Covid test shows no sign of slowing.

The latest data provided by the Government reveals deaths are up by an alarming 25.2 percent in the last seven days.

The number of deaths recorded on September 11 alone was 156 and there have been 983 Covid-related deaths recorded over the past seven days - up 25.2 percent.

In total, 156,888 people have died with Covid on their death certificate, or 134,144 deaths within 28 days of a positive test.

And according to the latest Government figures, England has a much higher rate per 100,000 population for deaths within 28 days of the first positive test, standing at 208.2.

Wales has had 5,726 deaths in total, a rate of 180.7, while Scotland's rate is calculated at 150.8 and Northern Ireland's is 129.1.

Breaking down that data even further, you can see how each region has fared:

According to data from Our World in Data, the UK’s death rate is alarmingly high when compared to other countries.

The UK ranks above France, Canada, Germany and even India in its Covid deaths rate.

But the UK is still far behind the US which has seen a spike in Covid-related deaths.

The US recorded a death rate of 4.9 per million people on September 10.

This is worryingly high - especially when compared to the UK’s rate of 1.9 or India’s rate of 0.2.

Brits may have thought lockdowns were a thing of the past, but rumours have been growing that an October lockdown could take place next month.

The news comes after ministers have increasingly expressed their fears that the NHS could be overwhelmed this winter.

This lockdown, dubbed a “firebreak”, could be implemented to fight rising infection rates, deaths and hospitalisations as the UK heads towards flu season.

A senior Government scientist told iNews plans for an October lockdown have been drawn up.

But the Department for Education denied the report saying it was "not true”.

In a tweet it said: ”It is not true that the government is planning a lockdown or firebreak around the October half term.”

In a statement, a Downing Street spokesperson further supported this.

They said the Government was not “planning a lockdown or firebreak around the October half term”.

However, the spokesperson didn’t completely rule out the possibility of another lockdown.

The spokesperson added the Government "retains contingency plans as part of responsible planning for a range of scenarios, but such measures would only be re-introduced as a last resort to prevent unsustainable pressure on the NHS.”
