Good news... Figures show virus case rates are falling in every region

The jabs have led to 66,900 fewer hospital admissions than there would have been otherwise, according to Public Health England (PHE).

In a further boost, England's pingdemic mayhem looks like it's almost over, with the number of alerts sent by the NHS Covid app plunging by 43 percent.

The triple dose of good news comes 18 days after Boris Johnson's Freedom Day when most lockdown restrictions were lifted.

PHE's weekly surveillance report shows that Covid case rates are continuing to drop in all age groups.

Yorkshire and the Humber had the highest rate, with 354.7 cases per 100,000 people in the seven days to August 1, down week-on-week from 422.5. North-east England had the second highest at 320.6, tumbling from 527.8.

And South-east England had the lowest: 229.5, a slide from 289.6.

The PHE said the vaccines have also prevented some 23 million infections and up to 63,000 deaths in England alone.

With the peak of the third wave appearing to be behind us, the UK yesterday recorded another 30,215 Covid-19 cases in 24 hours.

A further 86 people died within 28 days of a positive test, taking the total to 130,086.

New test and trace data shows the number of people receiving a positive result in England has fallen for the first time in almost three months.

A total of 189,232 people tested positive at least once in the week to July 28.

The figure is down 39 percent on the previous week, and is the first week-onweek drop since the beginning of May. More people are also getting their test result within 24 hours, according to the statistics.

Meanwhile, the Zoe Covid study app has suggested new daily symptomatic cases have decreased.

Dr Claire Steves, lead scientist at King's College London, said: "According to Zoe, the number of new daily cases in the UK has finally begun to fall, with an R value around 0.9.

"This is the good news the UK has been waiting for but we mustn't get ahead of ourselves.

"This pandemic definitely isn't over yet as cases remain very high." The latest data from the NHS app shows there are currently about 46,905 new daily symptomatic cases in the UK. This is a drop from 60,271 last week.
